"Spam Filtering for Listproc Mailing Lists"
You may have noticed that a significant number of spam email messages are sent via mailing lists to which you have subscribed. List owners may now choose to filter spam sent via these lists. If you have an existing standard listproc mailing list or class mailing list and would like to set up spam filtering, follow the process for existing list owners instructions below. If you are planning to create a new list, the process for new lists instructions below will guide you to the email list setup page where you will be asked if you would like to setup spam filtering.
Process for existing list owners:
- From the http://email.ucdavis.edu site, select Manage listproc mailing lists.
- This will take you to the Manage a UC Davis ListProc Mailing Lists page.
- Enter mailing list info, select Set mailing list options, then click Process Request.
- On the Changing Options for (your mailing list) page, go to Spam Filtering.
- Select Yes to turn on spam filtering; the default setting is No. Turning on spam filtering means that all mail assigned a score over the threshold you select will be deleted automatically. Before making your selection, please note that spam filtering is not 100% correct. You may, from time to time, receive spam messages (false negatives) and some messages that are not spam may be deleted (false positives). You can minimize the risk of false positives by raising the threshold (as described in step 8).
- Enter the threshold.
(The threshold indicates the number of “points” your messages must receive before being filtered away from your list members’ inboxes. While the campus threshold is 5, list owners can choose to set it higher (we recommend setting the threshold at 8). This will allow more mail through.)
Process for new lists:
- From the http://email.ucdavis.edu site, go to Request an electronic mailing list
- On the Mailing List Setup page, enter the information requested and select Continue.
- On the Mailing List Setup Page 2-Options page, you can choose to filter spam sent to the list. Explanations are provided on the page.
